Born December 4, 1969, Shawn Corey Carter is a professional American rap artist / producer / business person. Raised in the Marcy Projects of Brooklyn, New York, “Jazzy” (later shortened to Jay-Z) founded his own label, Roc-a-Fella Records, to create his 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt.
The 19-time Grammy Award winner (1999, 2004 x 2, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 x 3, 2011 x 3, 2012, 2013 x 3, 2014 x 2) had the #1 Selling Solo Album on the Billboard 200, 11 times (1 more than Elvis Presley) and was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Artists (2010). He is the co-owner / co-founder of Rocawear clothing, entertainment company Roc Nation and sports management Roc Nation Sports. On April 4, 2008 he married Beyoncé Knowles.
