Biography

Born April 19, 1978, James Edward Franco is a professional American actor / producer / director / author / student. The oldest of three brothers, Franco’s breakout role came in 1999 on the television series Freaks and Geeks  followed by his 2001 lead in the biopic James Dean.
 
Having initially dropped out of UCLA to pursue acting, the Palo Alto native would later return to complete his undergraduate degree in creative writing. In 2010, Franco completed his master’s degree at Columbia and began his Ph.D. at Yale University. In 2011, the Pinapple Express  star also earned his master’s in filmmaking at New York University.
 
In 2002, Franco won the Golden Globe Award for best actor (James Dean) and in 2010, he was an Academy Award nominee for best actor (127 Hours). The 2008 face of Gucci pour Homme, has supported the American Foundation for AIDS Research and Free Arts NYC. In 2011, he won the Spirit of Elysium award from The Art of Elysium, a charity that helps children with serious medical conditions.
